In the United States, lawmakers have recently pushed forward a new sanctions bill aimed at tightening pressure on nations that continue to buy Russian oil and energy products. The bill gives the U.S. government the authority to impose very high import taxes — up to 500 percent — on goods and services from countries that knowingly trade in Russian oil, gas, uranium and similar products. This development has directly affected India, because New Delhi has been one of the world’s largest buyers of discounted Russian crude oil in recent years as part of its efforts to secure affordable energy. The pending U.S. legislation would mark a big escalation compared with earlier measures, which already saw tariffs on Indian goods rise to 50 percent. The new proposal would allow tariffs to rise much further, essentially making Indian exports to the United States much more expensive or nearly impossible to sell in the U.S. market. The possibility of such a steep tariff has stirred concern among Indian businesses and investors. Indian stock markets reacted nervously when the news broke, with shares in export-oriented sectors like textiles and seafood falling. Business groups and industry bodies have warned that the tariff threat could hurt jobs and exports if it moves forward. The Government of India has said it is aware of the proposed U.S. bill and is closely monitoring developments, emphasizing that India’s energy policy is based on its own market needs and the goal of securing fuel at affordable prices for its people and economy. Indian officials have not yet signaled any change to their energy buying strategy, but the issue is likely to be a topic of ongoing diplomatic engagement. Overall, this situation reflects rising trade tensions between India and the United States, rooted in differences over energy imports and broader geopolitical disagreements.
